How lawn & garden products are approved
In the United States, each lawn and garden product containing pesticides and fertilizers must be registered and lable approved by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) before it is packaged and made available to consumers. The EPA considers the effects of each potential product on pets, humans and the environment through a data review process that often takes from eight to ten years.

Labels are your friend
When used according to label directions, most lawn and garden products are appropriate for use in environments where pets live, but it is imperative for pet owners to read and follow these instructions so unnecessary exposure does not occur. Two minutes of reading a label is the most valuable time you can spend to protect your pet from harmful substances.

Keep pets out of harm's reach
Pets may become exposed to a product through improper use, unsafe storage or their own curious determination. After a pesticide or fertilizer is applied, it is important to keep pets away from the application area for the amount of time expressly listed on the product label. Lawn and garden products should always be stored in areas that are inaccessible to animals, such as locked storage sheds or garages.

Your phone line is your lifetime
If you suspect your pet has been overexposed to a lawn and garden product, consult a local veterinarian or call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 888-426-4435 immediately. A manufacturer's hotline number is also included on all United States product labels.

When it comes to pest control products, the label is the law. A little attention in the application and storage of these products can go a long way to maintaining a healthy lawn and environment for pets and their families.

Your yard is a retreat of fun and relaxation for your pet. Fetching a ball. Chasing a squirrel. Sniffing every corner. Napping in the sun. These idyllic moments can stay that way by being careful with your lawn and garden products. Unfortunately, pets can be accidentally poisoned by lawn and garden products that were improperly used or stored. With some basic knowledge and care, you can ensure your beautiful lawn is also a healthy environment for your pet.
