CHINCH BUG
ISSUES

By Harold Jones
Southern Horticultural Consultants

Chinch bugs love our hot Florida summer weather, but fortunately only attack St. Augustine lawns. Although they are worse in hot, dry weather, they also attack lawns in hot wet weather.

In the last 10 to 12 years we have lost our most effective pesticides for chinch bug control through actions by the Environmental Protection Agency of the federal government. The chemicals we had left were not as effective and chinch bugs began to become resistant to these materials. For the chemicals to be effective they had to be watered into the soil immediately following application and we were experiencing dryer than normal weather. This made the resistance develop faster than we expected.

Then along came a new class of pesticides which offered some help managing chinch bugs, called the neo-nicotinoids. They were really helpful in suppressing chinch bug populations. Now the EPA is looking at the neo-nicitinoids and we will probably lose them for chinch bugs.

The situation as it is means we have fewer chemicals and more tolerance or resistance to those chemicals. The entire industry is frustrated with chinch bug issues and are hoping some new chemistry will be available in the near future to help us manage these damaging insects.
