2013 LATE FROST
Causes Damage to
Lawns and Landscapes
By Harold Jones

Our unusual winter this year has resulted in some lawn damage during the later winter. An unseasonably warm January gave way to some hard freezes in February and lawns were actively growing when the hard freeze of February 18th occurred. We had heavy frost and temperatures in the low to mid 20's. If the turf had been dormant the damage would have been minor, but actively growing it was seriously damaged. When we get late freezes we have to delay starting the spring maintenance program. When grass is damaged late like it was earlier this year, it is best to delay the beginning of a maintenance program to reduce further turf damage. Mowing grass during or immediately after a freeze can increase the damage to the turf area. It is best to wait for approximately 10 to 14 days following a freeze to begin mowing. Dry weather is common in April, May and early June. This is typically the time of year when our lawns need watering the most. The weather predictions I have seen indicate the next 90 days should be drier than normal, so be sure your irrigation system is working properly.
